Tapantí National Park

The Rio Perlas Hotel borders with the Tapanti National Park, whose entrance is located 10 kilometers from the Hotel. Tapanti Park covers about 600 km² and forms a massive collection of nature parks that extends into Panamá (the largest of which is the Parque Internacional La Amistad). The Park protects forests to the north of Chirripó National Park, and also contains part of the Orosí River and Rio Perlas River.

Orosi Church

The delightful town of Orosi, located only 8 km from the Rio Perlas Hotel, is a peaceful and serene community in the province of Cartago, featuring a tranquil setting among the lush forest and tall pine trees. Some of Costa Rica’s most historic landmarks can be found here, including the Iglesia de San Jose de Orosi.

Irazú Volcano

The Irazu Volcano, whose summit is located only 25 km from the Rio Perlas Hotel, is an active volcano situated in the Cordillera Central close to the city of Cartago. The volcano, which can be seen from the Hotel, has several craters, one of which contains Diego de la Haya, a green crater lake. The lake's waters flow through naturally formed underground tunnels and passageways until they reach the Pura Pora site of the Fountain of Eternal Youth, where bathers can enjoy their wondrous healing and therapeutic qualities.

Turrialba Volcano

The Turrialba Volcano, located only 50 km from the Rio Perlas Hotel, is a 3,340 meter high stratovolcano, whose summit has three craters, distanced at about 2-3 km from each other. Visitors to the volcano can explore the mountain range and montane forest below the summit, where natural ferns, bromeliads, lichens and mosses grow in the wild. On clear days both the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea can be seen from the summit of the volcano.

Fishing at Cachi

Lake Cachi is a lake located less than 10 km from the Rio Perlas Hotel. The lake is southeast of Cartago and was created by the Cachí Dam, an arch dam which is located north of the Tapantí National Park. Cachi is known for its abundance of fish, and sport fishing is a main pastime of tourists and locals alike. The abundance of trout fish is especially prevalent in this great fishing location. The roads leading to the lake are lines with stalls selling all kinds of tropical fruits and vegetables, as well as local souvenirs. Visitors can fish for their own trout and bring their fresh catch to a lakeside restaurant to cook up on the spot for a delectable lunch or dinner.

Ujarras Ruins

The Ruins of Ujarras are located about 3.5 km from the Rio Perlas Hotel, and 15 km from Orosi. The historical site is the location of the ruins of Costa Rica’s oldest church, built in 1693 but no longer in use. The ruins are sprawled between beautiful gardens, manicured cultivated parks and large patches of grass which make great picnic areas. The Ruins of Ujarras document the original culture and way of life for the first settlers of Costa Rica. There are souvenirs and local delicacies for sale as well on site.

The Lankester Botanical Gardens

Located 11 km from the Rio Perlas Hotel are the Lankester Botanical Gardens, which contain within 11 hectares over 3,000 species of plants and flowers, as well as a wide variety of orchids of many shapes and colors. The Turrialba Botanical Gardens are also nearby.

Cartago itself contains some of the most prized coffee plantations on the planet, and is known worldwide for the best-tasting quality coffee beans on the planet. Coffee plantation tours offered teach visitors about the history of coffee, how it is farmed and harvested prior to the milling and the transformation of the coffee cherry into a ready to roast bean, including coffee reception and measurement, depulping, fermenting, drying, storage and finally husking, grading and roasting.

Basílica de los Ángeles of Cartago

The Basílica de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles (Our Lady of the Angels Basilica) a Roman Catholic basilica in Cartago, is located 10 km from the Rio Perlas Hotel. The actual stone statue of Our Lady of the Angels is consecrated to the Virgin of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, a representation of the Virgin Mary carrying the infant Jesus.
